Our History
Blue Bird Bus Sales of Pittsburgh, Inc. has grown from a regional dealership into one of the premier Blue Bird partners in the nation. What began as a 10-county operation in Pennsylvania has expanded into a multi-state organization built on strategic growth, operational excellence, and long-term relationships.
Timeline of Growth
1971
Blue Bird Bus Sales of Pittsburgh, Inc. becomes the Blue Bird dealer for southwestern Pennsylvania, with an Area of Responsibility (AOR) covering 10 counties.
1987
Mark D. Schmitt purchases the dealership from his father in the company’s 16th year of operation. With a clear vision to become one of the top dealers in the Blue Bird network, disciplined expansion and operational excellence become the company’s guiding principles.
1991
Monark Student Transportation Corp., our sister company, is formed as the contracting arm of the organization — a strategic and vital addition to our umbrella of companies.
1994
Our Blue Bird AOR expands to include 10 additional counties in northwestern Pennsylvania.
2004
Blue Bird Bus Sales takes over the entire state of West Virginia for Blue Bird. This milestone marks a significant step in our growth strategy. A centrally located, state-of-the-art facility is established to serve the region effectively.
2017
Blue Bird invites Mark D. Schmitt to become the Blue Bird dealer for the entire Commonwealth of Virginia — one of the largest school bus markets in the country. We accept the challenge and continue to expand Blue Bird market share across Virginia year after year.
Today
Our Area of Responsibility now stretches from the shores of Lake Erie in northwestern Pennsylvania to the Atlantic coastline of southeastern Virginia.
We operate state-of-the-art, full-service facilities in every market we serve, offering:
- New and used bus sales
- Complete parts departments
- Full-service maintenance and repair
- Full body and collision repair facilities
- Paint booths capable of accommodating 40’+ vehicles
In addition to our physical facilities, we maintain a fleet of mobile service technicians capable of supporting customers anywhere within our territory — a true value-added benefit to our growing customer base.
The products we represent include Blue Bird, Micro Bird by Girardin, Elkhart Custom, National, FR Conversions and powertrain solutions across gasoline, diesel, propane, and battery-electric platforms.
All locations are certified service centers for Blue Bird, Micro Bird by Girardin, Ford, Roush, Cummins, Caterpillar, Spartan, Braun, Ricon, Tran-Arctic, On-Spot, and more.
